Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?1

Corinthians 6:19 (NKJV)

Many Christians find it difficult to live consistently.

It's difficult because they believe it's up to them to make it work. Spiritual amnesia is the cause of this problem. If you don't know who you are and what you have in Christ, you'll never know what to do or how to live for Christ.

This was the issue with the Corinthian church. It was divided into two extremes. One group was exceptionally "spiritual," while the other was exceedingly "carnal." Despite the fact that the former appeared "better" than the latter, both allowed their flesh to dictate their behaviour.

The Apostle Paul returned the Corinthians back to the truth of the gospel by telling them, "Do you not know your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit?" "Know" in Greek is eido, which means "to perceive something by discovering its reality." The Corinthians were aware that the Holy Spirit dwelled within them, but they had forgotten both His presence and power.

Instead, they struggled to live the Christian life, but Paul encourages them (and us as well) to recollect and remember the wonderful truth that the Holy Spirit dwells in every believer. To Paul, our bodies are never ours, but they always belong to God. God proves His personal stamp of ownership by sending His Holy Spirit to live in us.

The presence of the Holy Spirit within you indicates God's personal acceptance and approval of you. Now in Christ, you have a completely new identity, a completely new nature, a completely new position with God, a completely new reality, and a completely new destiny.

Everything about you is so new that you need to be "re-introduced" to yourself. Allow the Holy Spirit to familiarise you with the new life in Christ rather than relying on your own strength to grow and mature as a new creation. His mission is to shine a light on everything you have in Christ (Ephesians 1:17-23) because it is God's desire for you to be fruitful and fulfilled.
