When [the wise men] saw the star, they shouted joyfully. As they came into the house and saw the child with Mary his mother, they bowed down and worshiped him. They opened their treasure boxes and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Matthew 2:10-11 (NET)

When the wise men saw the magnificent star, they followed it to the Christ Child. Imagine their joy when they found Jesus, and how they worshipped Him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Unquestionably, their worship came at a very real and personal cost.

The wise men were willing to inconvenience themselves because they saw something worthwhile in following the star and finding Jesus. They left their comfort zones and daily routines to connect with God, and they were greatly blessed by Him.

Many of us, unlike the wise men, do not need to travel far or spend a lot of money to be with Jesus. However, we often allow some inconveniences and distractions of everyday life to keep us from gathering with other believers to worship and serve Him.

When we make ourselves more important than God, we are effectively worshipping ourselves. Because of this mindset, our obedience and service are seen as burdens rather than acts of love. If we are careful, our hearts can become cold and less receptive to what God has to say to us.

What role does worship play in your life?

It is good to grow a healthy rhythm of worship and find ways to commune with God throughout the day. His Spirit will make our obedience and service easy and delightful. This gives us confidence and courage to listen to Jesus and do what He says.
