For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared in advance so that we would walk in them.

Ephesians 2:10 (EHV)

Our vocation is an extension and expression of who God called us to be in Christ. When we are called to faith in Christ, we are also called to bring others to faith through practical acts of service and love. In other words, we have a “primary calling” to follow Jesus, and we have a “secondary calling” to follow Jesus into the world.

All of us are God's workmanship created for good works and our good works make the truth of the gospel “attractive” to others. This is the aim behind our vocation.

Too often, people think that vocation is limited to those called to be full-time church ministry or mission work. God’s idea of vocation is much bigger than that. Every believer is called to full-time ministry in their sphere of influence. Whether you serve God in the home, in the church or in the world, take your vocation seriously, do it heartily and with loving excellence.

Your vocation is your unique Kingdom assignment of sharing God's love in whatever place or profession God has called you into. Whether you are a teacher, parent, or just a student, you have a unique and personal mission to influence and impact those around you. What you do in your workplace is integral to what Christ is doing in bringing about His salvation of the world. You are united with Him to do good to others and bring glory to God.

From God’s perspective, your vocation is bigger than your job or your business. It has eternal value and spiritual significance. Hence, it is wise to discern your vocation and ask God's guidance in your life.

Knowing your vocation empowers you to be part of God’s mission in the world. It transforms you from a consumer into a contributor and from “a pew-warmer” into a producer of good.
