Now the sons of the prophets said to Elisha, “See, the place where we dwell under your charge is too small for us. 2 Let us go to the Jordan and each of us get there a log and let us make a place for us to dwell there.” And he answered, “Go.”

2 Kings 6:1-2 (ESV)

It is good to understand when there is a need for change and to embrace a good change. Sometimes we get so used to the way we do things in our personal lives and in church that we may not understand we are limiting ourselves from living a more fulfilled life.

We often pay lip service to change.

Many times, we desire God to make the most radical changes in the way we do church, yet we continue to sit in the same seats every Sunday. When the sons of the prophets realised their lodging was becoming too small, they told Elisha that each of them would carry a wooden beam across the Jordan to create a new gathering place. Change requires everyone's efforts and activities. Each must contribute to the fulfilment of God's vision.

Our God desires to move us from our small-mindedness to a greater understanding of His work in our lives. Every season of change gives us increases our empowerment and capacity to bring about transformation. Just as God chose the sons of the prophets, God is raising and releasing sons and daughters with the power to prophesy over this generation. Our words and works will produce fruits of righteousness and holiness in our community and city.

What is stopping you from fulfilling God's purpose for your life?

Change can be difficult and even scary. However, refusing to change due to fear of failure and discomfort undermines our confidence in God. The sons of the prophets were willing to attempt things that the children of Israel were afraid to do. Crossing the Jordan represents a fresh season of growth and great blessings. Start with the first step, and God will show you the next one.
