In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly. But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.

Luke 1:5-7 New International Version

One lesson we can learn from the story of Zechariah and Elizabeth is that don't let age or and many of life's uncertainties rule you out from serving God.

If we limit God from using us because we are getting older in years, we are keeping ourselves away from being part of what God is doing. Even though physically we may not be as strong or as fast, we must remain open to God's invitation to a possible change of season. This is because there is no age limit or retirement date when it comes to fulfilling God's plan and purpose.

In fact, the Bible has many interesting accounts of God calling the old and elderly to do great and exciting things. Abraham was seventy five years of age when he departed from Haran. Moses was eighty when he led the children of Israel out of Egypt. Anna was nearly a century old when she prophesied over Jesus, declaring Him to be the Messiah and Redeemer. The stories of these senior people tell us that we are never too old for a career change or switch to a new direction in life.

If you know of anyone who thinks they are past the prime of their vigour to serve God and help others, ask them to consider these encouraging words:

So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come.

Psalm 71:8 English Standard Version

In spite of getting old or feeling more vulnerable, the Psalmist still finds meaning in life and fulfilment. That is, to witness for God and to see His power working in people's lives. Keep serving God as long as you are able and don't limit what God can do in your life. This was precisely what Zechariah and Elizabeth did. Both sang songs of celebration and rejoicing when they trust God to turn their season of barrenness to a season of blessedness.

You cannot put a limit on yourself when you worship a God who is without limit in being, power and purpose. Learn to trust God and give your everyday to Him. And God will give you the opportunity and favour to stay faithful.
