Meanwhile a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was a learned man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervour and taught about Jesus accurately, though he knew only the baptism of John. He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately.

Acts 18:24-26 (NIV)

Can you remember the person who invited you to believe in Christ or helped you grow as a Christian? Most likely, they were ordinary people who just love Jesus and love to share about Him.

Just as it takes a village to raise a child, it also takes a church to grow a Christian. Luke tells us about Priscilla, and Aquila, who played a significant role in helping Apollos mature spiritually and gain a better understanding of the gospel. Later, they also wrote to other Christians to support Apollos in his work in the gospel.

Priscilla, and Aquila are good examples of how God uses ordinary people to build his kingdom. This is one of the reasons why the early church grew so quickly. People would gather around a meal at someone's house, pray and proclaim the Scriptures, and allow the power of the Holy Spirit to work through them. Everyone did it together as a community — it wasn't just one person taking on the workload.

The church life we see in Acts is “doable” and “replicable” and within the capacity of every average Christian. In order for our church to thrive and make a difference in our community, we can't just leave it all up to the church leaders and ministry leaders. All of us can engage in building lives and reaching lives because all of us have been given the ministry of reconciliation.
