For we know, brothers and sisters loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction.

1 Thessalonians 1:4-5 (NIV)

The Thessalonians were able to comprehend what the Apostle Paul was trying to convey to them in his letter. He was only in their city for three brief weeks (Acts 17:1-4), yet during that time, many Jews and Gentiles came to faith in Christ when he was preaching the gospel in the synagogue. His teachings on the resurrection of Jesus had such a profound effect on the people that it sparked a riot in the city.

The gospel is so much more than mere words. It is the supernatural unparalleled power of God that saves and transforms lives. Sometimes we can get so familiar with the message of the gospel that we no longer see it for what it really is or appreciate it. When we lose focus on the gospel we will become dull of hearing and unteachable.

The fight of faith takes place in the heart, where doubt and unbelief are the lurking dangers that threaten our trust in Christ and seek to enslave us once again.

The true proclamation of the gospel ushers the true supernatural presence and power of God. These two go together. Our faith is lifeless and fruitless without the gospel. And a dead faith will never turn cities and nations to Jesus Christ. It is this attitude that breeds defeatist Christians who will never dare to step out in faith from their comfort zones.

Bear in mind, our faith is never about what we can do for God, but what can God do through us. But if there is no real reliance on the power of God, all that’s left of the gospel is watered down. If this is not what we want to see happening in our lives, individually and collectively, we need to keep our eyes on Jesus Christ, who will help us to finish the race of faith well.
