Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.

Hebrews 5:8-10 (ESV)

Our salvation is dependent on Christ’s obedience for us.

Even though Jesus was God, He submitted Himself completely to God's will for our salvation. When we read that “he learned obedience through what he suffered”, it does not mean He was previously disobedient and had to be disciplined. Rather, as God’s Son, Jesus did not have to suffer, but His obedience to the Father is thoroughly proven through His suffering and sorrow.

The Greek word for “learn” is manthanō which means “learn to know and experience.” It is same Greek word used to describe a disciple. In other words, Jesus was “disciplined” by His Father to learn and remain obedient. This can be seen in how the Holy Spirit help Jesus in carrying out His Father’s work of salvation. It was through His humility and obedience to the cross that Jesus became the author of our salvation and the high priest of our faith.

Obedience is not a goal, but a fruit of one who is well loved by God. Since Christ is the perfect example of obedience, we must also learn obedience especially when confronted with unknown futures and conflicts because of God's call on our lives.

There is nothing to fear when we already know that our God will never forget or forsake us. However, it is only by allowing God to work on us through His Spirit that our obedience becomes a true reflection and manifestation of God's grace. It will bring us to new depths of intimacy and trust with Him, shaped by many amazing experiences beyond expectations.
