Always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

2 Timothy 3:7 (NKJV)

As far as the gospel is concerned, knowledge is more than just being aware of the truth, it also involves being changed by the truth. If your understanding of God's grace hasn't influenced you to become more like Jesus, you probably didn't get it at all.

Many of us need a fresh encounter with the gospel.

In his second letter to Timothy, the Apostle Paul addressed this issue. Some believers thought it wasn't enough to believe that their sufficiency came from none other than Christ alone. This was due to their disregard for the gospel and their disregard for what Christ had accomplished through His finished work on the Cross. Instead, they were always on the lookout for the latest spiritual fads and dubious claims.

Paul tells us that these believers were "always learning" but they never quite arrived "to the knowledge of the truth". The word for "learning" in Greek bears the same meaning as "disciple". In other words, despite the fact that these so-called believers appeared to be learning about Christ, they were actually unteachable.

Why?

This was due to selective hearing, in which they only heard what they wanted to hear. As a result, they would never mature as disciples because they were not learning the truth.

In the context of 2 Timothy 3:7, the Greek word for "knowledge" is epignōsis,\ which means precise or perfect truth. Jesus is the epitome of truth. This is why Paul prays to God to give every believer the spirit of wisdom and revelation so that we will have full knowledge of him. (Ephesians 1:17-18). Then we will grow well and mature well to live a complete life in Christ. This is realised through lifelong growth and learning everything you can about Christ and what He has done for you.

One of the benefits of having the knowledge of the truth is the ability to break free from the grip of past pain, failure, and brokenness. Once your lens and perception of God have been radically transformed by true knowledge of Christ, you will live a life of healing and breakthroughs.
