Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 5:20-21 English Standard Version

The Apostle Paul uses the phrase, “hyperperisseuo” to describe the super-abounding grace we have in Christ. What he is trying to say is that we can never exhaust God’s provision of grace to overcome the power of sin. The gift of grace increases more as the struggle against sin and Satan increases. Christ’s victory gives us the confidence to walk in obedience to His calling in our lives to follow Him.

Apart from Christ and His perfect work of grace it is impossible to live the Christian life. It is through our experience of salvation that we encounter the limitless and infinite depth of God’s grace in a real and personal way. We are not only set free from what displeases God, but we are set right to pursue a life that pleases God. As we continue to lead on God’s grace to grow and mature us, we will produce a godly life filled with the Holy Spirit and showing forth fruits of righteousness.

Grace is not just for salvation. Grace is the overflowing source and power of our daily walk and witness. When we either forget or neglect to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ and give Him glory (2 Peter 3:18), it is easy for our hearts to become cold and indifferent to the beauty of the gospel and the beautiful reality of living the abundant life.

When we use grace as an excuse of not doing anything to grow our relationship and trust in God, we may have misunderstood grace and consequently missed many opportunities to become more and more like Christ.
