Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city subject to idolatry.

Acts 17:16 (GNV)

What is God saying to us about our city?

God knows exactly what's going on in our city and He cares about how it impacts everyone's lives and well-being. As a people of God, we must pray to discern God’s desired future for our city and how we can work for its good and peace.

Luke notes how Paul was deeply distressed by all the trappings of idolatry in the city of Athens. But that didn't stop him from proclaiming the gospel of God’s kingdom with urgency and love. In the same way, we must believe God has brought us to draw people and communities to Him.

Everyone is searching for something to give them meaning and purpose to their life. But in some cases, our ideals have become our idols because we don't look at life from the perspective of eternity. Idolatry is a form of self-harm. It is the act of striving for something that devalues you as a person created in the image and likeness of God. This blind spot leads to a longing restless desire from more because God is missing in our hearts.

If God is missing from His proper place in our lives, all earthly pursuits are meaningless. Whether it is work or something else, sooner or later we will become bored, dissatisfied, and empty. This will hinder our effectiveness as witnesses for God in our city.

Bear in mind, we are called to be different and to make a difference wherever we go. Learn to recognise your rightful place in His kingdom and God will grow and shape you to reach your neighbours and city with His love and glory.
