We are called to gather in order to scatter.
The church is never meant to be a storehouse to accumulate believers, but rather a station from which sent sons and daughters of God are launched to transform their communities.
Sadly, so much emphasis on the Christian life is placed on Sunday attendance and church ministry. This explains why it is easy to become a sedentary and consumer-oriented Christian. It also means we have unwittingly confused the gospel with our Western carefree and laid-back way of living. A life with Jesus, on the other hand, promises so much more. Deep down, most of us know better. But we would rather settle for less than actively pursuing God's best for our lives.
Consider these words of Jesus when he first invited Peter, James and John to follow Him:
Follow Me [as My disciples, accepting Me as your Master and Teacher and walking the same path of life that I walk], and I will make you fishers of men.”
Matthew 4:19 (Amplified)
Our missional faithfulness and fruitfulness are directly impacted by how we perceive the gospel. However, when we succumb to the temptation to reduce the gospel to merely showing up at a weekend event that makes us feel good, we rob it of its true power to make us good.
In the biblical worldview, following Jesus requires full focus and commitment. We don’t live dichotomised lives. We don't behave one way in church and another outside of church. Rather, we live in unity and continuity with God, no matter where we are or what we're doing. In other words, if you live the life Jesus meant you to live, there is no telling what might happen.
We are scattered to gather people to follow Jesus rather than sit them down in a pew. The aim of making disciples is not addition, but multiplication. Multiplication is to make disciples who make disciples who make disciples.
Follow Jesus and He will make you His fisher of people for His Kingdom.
