So let us come near to God with a sincere heart and a sure faith. We have been cleansed and made free from feelings of guilt. And our bodies have been washed with pure water.

Hebrews 10:22 (ICB)

One of the most important things to experience after being saved is the freedom from a guilty sinful conscience.

Sin consciousness is an unhealthy way of thinking about sin without the assurance of forgiveness and salvation. It is a persistent issue for many Christians. Instead of experiencing freedom and joy, they feel like they are constantly being judged and that they are unworthy of God’s love. This feeling of condemnation weighs them down and robs them of their rights and riches in Christ.

If your life is plagued by a guilty sinful conscience, it hinders your ability to be faithful and strong in the Lord. When we understand who we are and what we have in Christ through the grace of God's unconditional love, we are able to break the cycle of sin consciousness forever.

Sin consciousness is a lie because it is not pointing you to your new identity and new reality in Christ. It keeps reminding you of your old sinful nature, and not resting in Christ’s finished work and His righteousness in you.

Godly repentance is the answer to heal a guilty sinful conscience. It is to turn away from thoughts and actions that causes us to keep a distance from God. Thus, it is crucial to root ourselves in the gospel as we recognise and respond to repeated sinful habits and behaviour.

Hebrews urges us to continue to draw closer to God and remain steadfast in our faith, as we have already been cleansed from our sins through faith in the gospel. It is by knowing the truth that we destroy the lie and walk in freedom.
