Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Colossians 3:19 (ESV)

Many believers feel stuck in jobs they hate. Maybe it’s the work environment or the people around them. Either way, it’s hard to enjoy what you do—let alone find meaning in any of it. Instead of wallowing in self-pity or just trying to get through each day, choose to see things from a gospel perspective.

Our approach in the workplace is to do all things in the Lord's name.

It’s good to remember that God designed work to glorify Him and to advance the gospel. Your job, no matter what kind of work you do, is a blessing from God, even if you hate your job. The Apostle Paul was actually addressing slaves when he wrote: “Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus.” His advice to them can also apply to us. Work as if we are working for God.

Let your work be your worship to God.

It is perfectly alright not to enjoy what you are doing all the time. After all, we’ve all had our good and bad days at work. Our ultimate sense of job satisfaction should come from “Who we are in Christ” and not “What we do.” If our identity is defined by our career choice or job title, then contentment or fulfillment is fleeting.

If your job becomes so unbearable that you no longer enjoy it, pray and ask God to help you figure out why you are unhappy with your job and what you can do about it. He will give you strength and wisdom to handle your situation. In some cases, the work environment can be so unhealthy and unprofessional that leaving may be the right decision. Whatever you decide, always seek to honour God and not to forget Him.
