I waited patiently for the Lord; He turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him.

Psalm 40:1-3

Amid hardships and trials, David learned to have such strong trust in God and sing about it. When he cried out to God for help and mercy, God turned his weariness into worship and gave him a new song to sing.

A new song is not just a new tune that suddenly pops into your head. A new song can be an old song sung with a fresh perspective of God’s love to strengthen your faith. When God gives you a new song, He wants to awaken you to a new understanding of your life in Christ. Therefore, you cannot just be a Sunday worshipper. Rather you are to actively engage God daily in prayerful worship and discover (again and again) all the beautiful and wonderful things that God has freely and richly given to you.

If you are feeling weary and burdened, posture yourself to worship and find strength and encouragement in times of need and difficulties. David witnessed God’s goodness many times. When he called upon God in the day of trouble, he saw God delivered him time and again. All his psalms are testimonies to God’s love and kindness towards him. This is because all those tough and trying moments transformed David into a great worshipper and a great lover of God.

Problems may not be resolved or go away easily—but ultimately when you dare to trust God and sing a song of praise at midnight in your darkest hour, the most impossible and incredible thing can happen to you. Jehoshaphat sang on the day when he was very afraid, and God won the battle for him (2 Chronicles 20:1-7). Paul and Silas sang and glorify God in the dungeon, and God miraculously brought them out of danger (Acts 16:16-26).

No matter your season of life, ask God for a song to sing and declare boldly and offer it as a praise to Him.
