He who has a generous eye will be blessed, for he gives of his bread to the poor.

Proverbs 22:9 (NKJV)

God gives you the gift of life so that you might make your life a gift.

Nothing makes God happier than sharing your life with others. Giving is the most fulfilling way to live. Giving is not a requirement, but rather an opportunity. It is a chance because it puts your life and things into proper perspective. Do you own your possessions or do your possessions own you?

Giving is actually freedom.

When people do not know God, they are constantly on the lookout for more and more to fill the vacuum inside them. They become materialistic as a result of not properly feeding their spirit. We read in 3 John about Gaius (whose name means "glad"), who was a generous giver and a great financial supporter of many missions and Christians. The Apostle John praised Gaius, and even prayed for God to bless this well-liked man in every manner and for him to be as strong in body as he was in spirit (3 John 2).

When it comes to giving, though, some Christians get it wrong. They give with the intention of receiving huge financial rewards in return. If this is correct, it reduces giving to a spiritual formula. It is not right to believe that we give in order to receive.

Proverbs 22:9 tells us God favours the generous because they reflect His character. Feed on the wealth of His glorious riches in Christ to develop a charitable spirit. A giving spirit allows you to do more for others while never feeling as though you have less to live with.

Why?

God’s economy works differently from ours.

Be generous. Generosity begins with what is in your heart, not what is in your hands. Begin with what you have and work your way up. The more you give away, the more opportunities God has to make you a blessing.
