The devil is called to by a variety of names throughout the Bible. Jesus described him as a murderer, a liar, and the father of lies (John 8:44). The devil is referred to as the tempter in the gospel of Matthew when he appears to Jesus in the wilderness.

Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”

Matthew 4:3 (NKJV)

Temptation means “putting on trial”.

The devil is basically putting you on trial every time he tempts you. The devil is a master at spreading seeds of doubt and dread in people's minds. His goal is to make you question whether or not your relationship with God is genuine.

By questioning Jesus’s identity, the devil was subtly twisting the revelation, "You are My Son..." into a supposition, "if You are the Son of God." The devil can't take your identity away from you, but he may make you doubt its legitimacy.

As the Son of God, Jesus possesses more than the ability to change stones into food. He fought the devil, however, by responding to each temptation with the truth of God's Word. The devil can’t take the truth. Remember that God's Word is your Spirit's sword, cutting through Satan's lies and revealing him as a defeated foe. We are overcomers because Jesus overcame Satan and his evil cohort created on the Cross and made "a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it" (Colossians 2:15). Therefore, you must make it difficult for the devil to deceive you by fighting his temptations with God's Word.

Let Christ’s victory be your victory.

The Apostle James tells if we resist the devil, he will flee from us (James 4:7). The term "resist" was coined in the world of wrestling. It refers to your ability to stand firmly on your feet in order to gain leverage over your opponent and deflect all of their manoeuvres. We resist by talking back to the devil with what God has said about us in Christ.
