God will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.

Revelation 21:4 (ESV)

In the last year, I have lost a few friends who died rather suddenly and unexpectedly. The biggest hit was someone who was an effective mission mobiliser and trainer. Their deaths brought back memories of many different stories, as well as moments of joy and laughter and deep connection. Yet, because my friends and I have a common eschatological hope and faith in God, we know that our sadness and separation are just temporary and that we shall soon be reunited.

Perhaps, you too have lost a loved one?

Take heart from what the Apostle John says in Revelation 21:4, "God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” This Scripture verse holds a much deeper meaning than we realise, and we can learn to grieve with hope and live in faith in the revelation of God’s ultimate reign and rule over all things.

God will turn our tears of grief into tears of joy on that wonderful day because we will see again those whom we have lost to death. There will be no more sorrow, crying, or pain since our reunion will last an eternity, not just a few moments.

Death is a defeated enemy because of Jesus’ finished work. It is through His resurrection that our Lord destroyed death’s grip on us and raised us into new life in Him. Meanwhile we may feel robbed and frustrated by our loss, we can find solace in God's comforting presence and power, especially when we are overwhelmed. Live with hope, knowing that Jesus is our resurrection and life, so that even in death, we have no fear but confidence in His victory.
