Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfil the law of Christ.

Galatians 6:2 (NIV)

If we cannot love, it is not because we lack love. Rather we have forgotten how much God loves us and how much the Holy Spirit works within us to love perfectly as He does. According to the Apostle Paul, we fulfil Christ’s Law of Love when we bear one another’s burdens. In other words, His law is not burdensome, but rather liberating.

We are all burdened with life's trials and tribulations. However, they grow more bearable as we learn to help and support one another. Christ has given His love to us, a love that goes beyond sympathy to include empathy and compassion for people in need.

God will refresh and replenish us with all the riches of His love as we walk together and encourage one another (Ephesians 3:19). We shall be able to resist jadedness, compassion fatigue and burnout because God’s mighty power is working in us to love beyond our own ability and our understanding. This is because we are walking by the Spirit and following Christ’s Law of Love rather than the Law of Moses.

We are called to set each other free, and we have been given the power to do so by Christ.

What Christ demands; He fulfils. In doing so, He frees us from the pride that seeks to claim credit for our actions, as well as the condemnation that makes us miserable when we are unable to love as we should. As Christ empowers our obedience, we develop an ever-increasing desire to please Him in everything we do. It is not about meeting a standard but following our Saviour.
