In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit would come upon a person assigned to a task but then always depart upon completion of the task. It is different in the New Testament. The Holy Spirit is not only given to every believer, but He also abides and dwells in every believer forever.
5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh,
but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.
It is impossible to live the Christian life without the Holy Spirit. Consider five things that He is doing for you right now:
He continually convicts you of your righteousness (John 16:8-10) to free you from a religious mindset and legalistic spirit.
He enables you to walk in a God-pleasing way (Romans 8:8-9) to make you fruitful in character and ministry.
He causes you to serve in the “newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter” (Romans 7:6, 2 Corinthians 3:6) in order to minister lovingly and supernaturally.
He empowers you to witness for Christ (Acts 1:8) to bring others into salvation.
He comforts you by teaching you all the truths regarding Jesus (John 14:26) to bring you rest, peace and joy.
