24 Now after those days his wife Elizabeth conceived; and she hid herself five months, saying, 25 “Thus the Lord has dealt with me, in the days when He looked on me, to take away my reproach among people.”
Something impossible happened to Elizabeth.
At an old age she conceived and gave birth to a son.
Luke told us that Elizabeth hid herself for five months when she was expecting John.
Why did she do it?
Most likely Elizabeth couldn’t believe the good news that she’s finally becoming a mother but she was too afraid of shame to come public with her story. So, she decided to hide until the little bump showed on her belly.
Both Zechariah and Elizabeth exhausted all their human strength to have a child until she saw God’s strength in her weakness. She proclaimed how God “dealt” with her by turning her barrenness into fruitfulness. The Greek word for “dealt” is poieō which means “to fashion, to shape, to create”. God “worked” Elizabeth on the inside before it showed on the outside. By doing so, God spared Elizabeth from any further reproach. The Greek meaning for “reproach” is disgrace. It is interesting that God gave Elizabeth a son whose name is grace to free her from disgrace. You can see the gospel here.
God made you a new creation in Christ to make you fruitful. Without Christ, it is inconceivable to live the Christian life. In Christ, He will extend His grace into every area of your life and cause every part to bear fruit in due season. Trust God and do not fear for God will not put you to shame.
