Our Sunday Worship

Our Sunday service is for the whole family!

There's always something refreshing and exciting when we gather as a church. Our services start with passionate worship followed by an inspiring biblical teaching.

We also cater for children from newborn babies to primary aged kids at the Children's church which provides quality, age specific programs with craft, music and Bible teaching.

Our Vision

Our Core Values

At Firstlight, we value:

Christ: being centred in Him
When Jesus said ‘It is finished’ on the cross, He was telling us He had done all that was required for us to receive salvation and God’s blessing in every part of our lives. We uphold this through passionate worship that declares what He has done and bold ministry that allows God’s blessings to flow through us and into the rest of the world.

Missions: taking the gospel to all nations
Following Jesus’ commandment and His love that compels us, it is our focus and priority to convey the message and love of Jesus to all who do not yet know Him.

Grace: having God’s favour
Because Jesus’ death on the cross paid the penalty for our sin (past, present and future), God thinks well of us all the time, no matter what we do. Having this certainty allows us to face every situation without fear of losing God’s love and favour toward us.

Identity: being sons and daughters of God
Jesus’ resurrection from the dead has made us the beloved children of God and able to inherit God’s riches. Having access to these riches, we are therefore stewards of the Father’s business, sons and daughters empowered to do the good works He has prepared.

Community: encouraging and honouring one another
As part of God’s family, we are a community that affirms and honours one another, seeing Christ in each other. We share life and serve together out of God’s love and grace.

Shine for Christ

As we covenant ourselves to shine for Christ, He will greatly increase our understanding of Him, and this will definitely increase our effectiveness to shine for Him. There are seven major arenas of influence in every society. We want to shine for Christ in each of these areas:

  • Arts & Entertainment
  • Business & Commerce
  • Spiritual Life
  • Education
  • Family
  • Government
  • Media

Light attracts those who seek it. As such, our church cannot be of one shade or colour but an Antioch Church of Acts 13 with a variant combination of believers that truly reflects the cosmopolitan flavour of Perth. Having moved from a migrant church into a missional community, we are affirming our call in Matthew 28: 18-20. We are to make disciples of all nations, baptising and teaching them to observe Christ's entire commandment. Imagine the day when Firstlight Community becomes a movement of raising up righteous men and women everywhere.

Our Pastor

Rev. Richard Tan has been serving as our pastor since August 2005. Prior to that, he served with the Methodist Church in Singapore for 10 years before completing a Master in Theological Studies programme in New Zealand. While he was there, he was an itinerant minister with the Wesleyan Methodist Church of New Zealand for almost 3 years. Currently he is connected to the Wesleyan Church of Australia and associated with AFCM Australia. He is married to Joanne since 1994, and together, they have two lovely children, Amanda Joy and Nathaniel Faith.

Our History

Firstlight has its beginning as the English-speaking congregation of Perth Chinese Christian Church (PCCC) located at Doubleview, Western Australia. We began as a church for Chinese migrants some thirty years ago. As God added to His church, we undertook a new vision and a fresh impetus to meet the challenges of our time. In step with its vision to reach out to the larger community of Perth, we made the deliberate decision to change from a migrant church into a mission community, to become a church without walls. In February 2006, we adopted our new name — Firstlight. This new name came from Proverbs 4:18, "The path of the righteous is like the first light of dawn, shining ever brighter unto the perfect day."

As we entered into a time of revitalising growth, strategic planning for future extension in terms of space and structure became natural and inevitable. An opportunity arose in November 2007 for Firstlight to establish a new worship site at ECU, Mt Lawley. By faith, our first Sunday Worship Service was held on 3 February, 2008 at Building 3, ECU Mt. Lawley Campus. Since then, we are thriving well as a global community of worshippers.

On 15 March 2008, the PCCC Board of Elders approved the proposal for Firstlight to become a fully autonomous entity by 1 July 2008. The approval was followed by a Memorandum of Understanding between Firstlight and PCCC, outlining details on administrative matters and future cooperation. Firstlight sees itself sharing a common spiritual heritage with PCCC, and in His grace, we hope to grow an amicable relationship with each other.

The Inaugural Dedication Service held on 6 July 2008 marked a new beginning for Firstlight Church. As a newly independent church, we believe God will multiply Firstlight to transform the city of Perth and nations beyond for His Kingdom’s sake.

Our Leaders

We see our church as a community of a network of ministries and cell groups set up for empowering and releasing a new breed of leaders to do the work of the ministry according to Ephesians 4:11-15. Leaders are called into offices of Elders and Deacons according to the Biblical qualifications and of the members of the Firstlight Board of Management.
